Sep 28, 2009 - Open the WD SmartWare 1.6.X program. It should bring you to the Home tab. Click on the Settings tab. Under Settings, click on Set Up. Unlock instructions: 1- extract the zip file you've downloaded en run the.exe. 2- select Continue to update and accept Licence Agreement. 3 - Next select Update Firmware 4- Check the check box 'I understand.' Under Warning section, a button 'drive erasure' will appear. 5- Click on drive erasure button.

Protecting business files such as reports, client and customer information from falling into the wrong hands is very essential for a successful business, so password-protecting your Western Digital external hard drive is a vital security measure. WD SmartWare software from Western Digital provides the ability to set a password for your drive. Protected files remain secure until you enter the password.

1.Drive

Connect your Western Digital external hard drive to the computer using the USB cable. If the device is powered with AC power, plug the power cable into an electrical outlet.

Go to the Western Digital Downloads page (link in Resources). Select your external hard drive from the Downloads section and click the 'WD SmartWare Software' link to install the program. Launch the application when the installation process completes.

Click the 'Settings' tab on the program's interface to display the 'WD SmartWare Settings' screen, and then click 'Set Up Drive' to display the Drive Settings screen.

Click the 'Security' button to display the Set Security screen. Enter a password in the 'Choose a password' box, and then enter it again in the Verify Password box.

Type a phrase or statement in the Password Hint box. If you forget your password, you'll be required to enter the hint to retrieve your Western Digital external hard drive's contents.

Click 'Remember my password on this computer' if you want this computer to keep track of your password, so you don't have to enter it each time you connect the hard drive. This function will only remember the password for the Windows account you're logged into. If you sign in to a different account, you must enter the password again.

7.

Click 'I Understand' after reading and complying with the warning about data loss, and then click the 'Save Security Settings' button.

Tips

  • Use a simple but effective password to protect your external hard drive. Use a password you can remember easily without being figured out by others.
  • Your password can contain up to 25 characters.
  • The Western Digital hard drive remains unlocked as long as you're using it; however, if you restart your computer, you must enter the password again to unlock it.

Warning

  • Western Digital can't retrieve your password. If you forget the password and password hint, you will permanently lose access to your data.
